Weird MC is a favorite among many people as she is a lady of varying sides. Her hit single “Ijo ya” continues to be one of my own private songs. Dancing has been here forever, probably since the first few weeks of human existence. Its importance is so great that a gathering without music and dancing is considered “dry, boring” e.t.c

Much study have gone into the science of dancing or let me say the art of dancing. I do not think I can do justice to that. One thing I’ve come to realize though is that “I’ve never heard anyone die as a result of dancing”. You know it would be funny if on one`s death certificate the doctor writes: Cause of Death – An overdose of Dance therapy. Good music initiates a form of bodily expression from the gentle nodding of the head to the very dramatic whole body gyration.
Dance is an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.
Dance may also be regarded as a form of nonverbal communication between humans, and is also performed by other animals (bee dance, patterns of behavior such as a mating dance). Gymnastics, figure skating and synchronized swimming are sports that incorporate dance, while martial arts kata are often compared to dances. Motion in ordinarily inanimate objects may also be described as dances (the leaves danced in the wind).
Definitions of what constitutes dance are dependent on social, cultural, aesthetic, artistic and moral constraints and range from functional movement (such as folk dance) to virtuoso techniques such as ballet. Dance can be participatory, social or performed for an audience. It can also be ceremonial, competitive or erotic. Dance movements may be without significance in themselves, such as in ballet or European folk dance, or have a gestural vocabulary/symbolic system as in many Asian dances. Dance can embody or express ideas, emotions or tell a story.
Dancing has evolved many styles. Break-dancing and Krumping are related to the hip hop culture. African dance is interpretative. Ballet, Ballroom, Waltz, and Tango are classical styles of dance while Square and the Electric Slide are forms of step dances.
Every dance, no matter what style, has something in common. It not only involves flexibility and body movement, but also physics. If the proper physics is not taken into consideration, injuries may occur. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance)
My focus now is on the therapeutic effect of dancing. I heard a story of how a certain young man who complained of pain and stiffness in his right shoulder joint to his doctor. He had been on medications and was not adhering to his exercise regime as recommended by his physiotherapist, saying there was no time to exercise his shoulder joint. On this fateful Friday night, he went clubbing, had a few drinks and decided to dance away the stress at work. He went to see his doctor on Monday for a check-up, not until the doctor examined his shoulder that this young man noticed he was pain-free. Upon further enquiry, the doctor deduced that at the club the “Jupa” song was played and my young friend complied, Lol. Good thing he did.
There are so many more examples I could give, but the bottom-line still remains that ‘dancing is a good form of aerobics’. It is good to know also, that this writer enjoys dancing. I dance very well in a faraway place called *My Dreams*. Here in this Land I’m the best dancer 25 years running i.e. the unbeatable champion. But in this land called *reality*, I don’t know what happened, someone just always beats me to the championship: someone like our very own Kaffy. But don’t give up on me yet, I just got a new pair of dancing shoes.
Where ever we are, let’s dance. Be it at church, mosque, a party and most especially at home, make sure you Dance! Dance!! Dance!!!
N.B there is no law against public dancing in Nigeria, so feel free to express yourselves anywhere, anyplace but not the highway. This writer doesn’t want to be held responsible for any social misconduct.
