It’s being speculated that Nigeria may host the 2012 Olympic football qualifying tournament after Egypt pulled out at the last minute, citing the upcoming parliamentary elections in that country.
The eight-team competition was scheduled to hold in Cairo from November 26 to December 10, with the top three teams qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics. Nigeria had put in a bid to CAF to host the competition but lost out to Egypt.
Before the verdict was announced, technical committee Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Chris Green revealed, “We always want to host the biggest competitions in Africa and the world because we are capable. We have put in a bid.”
There is a possibility of Nigeria stepping in to host the competition.
Algeria, Egypt, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and South Africa are the countries that will take part in the event.
